Surgery deals with a variety of different types of fractures, which are treated conservatively or surgically depending on the type. Fractures of the clavicle can occur in isolation, but also as an injury in polytraumatised patients after severe accidents.

- Medical clavicle fractures: miscoding and resulting consequences: The clavicle is part of the shoulder girdle and contributes to the mobility of the shoulder girdle and arm. In a previous clinical study (Bakir et al. 2017), it was noticed that the more complex, medial fracture is often miscoded. This resulted in our hypothesis in a preliminary paper that this is confused or miscoded with the medial third fracture. By using machine learning methods (logistic regression, group Bayesian networks), we are investigating factors and their relationships that favour miscoding.
- Classification of clavicle fractures by applying neural networks to X-ray images: In our study, we are trying to demonstrate that the use of artificial intelligence can significantly reduce the rate of miscoding in clavicle fractures. To do this, we will use X-ray images of patients from two sites (Greifswald University Medical Centre and accident hospital Berlin) to train a neural network. The trained network will automatically recognise errors in ICD coding and, in the future, support the doctor or coder in classification.
