A notable science-policy recognition for HEALTH.AI Pomerania: The project is explicitly named in the current position paper of the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) as an example of a pioneering project for the development of the healthcare system.
The Wissenschaftsrat is Germany’s highest science-policy advisory body, advising the federal and state governments on matters of science and higher education development. Its position papers are strategic steering documents that directly influence political decisions on funding and structures.
The paper, published in January 2026 under the title “Acting for Prevention and Health Promotion in Science, Healthcare and Society”, states that the German healthcare system is too heavily focused on treatment — prevention and health promotion play a subordinate role despite their long-term effectiveness. In view of demographic ageing, a shortage of skilled professionals, and a rising burden of disease, the Wissenschaftsrat considers a paradigm shift to be urgently needed: prevention should be established as a transdisciplinary cross-cutting issue, health data should be better utilised, and research findings should be systematically transferred into healthcare practice.
In the position paper, Greifswald is highlighted as an important location and initiator of such prevention-oriented projects, with the Interreg project HEALTH.AI Pomerania cited as an example of an innovative, integrated care strategy that combines artificial intelligence, digital health data, and cross-border cooperation. For the Euroregion Pomerania — characterised by low population density, an ageing society, and structural healthcare challenges on both sides of the border — this represents more than a symbolic acknowledgement: it is a political signal for the relevance of cross-border AI-supported health cooperation in the region.
