Epidemiology

Epidemiological research is a focus of Greifswald University Medical Centre, which has been conducting the “Study of Health in Pomerania”, an extensive epidemiological study with many thousands of participants, for more than 20 years now. We use artificial intelligence methods to mine this treasure trove of data and investigate complex associations between molecular, clinical, social and behavioural factors and disease risks.

Projects

  • Investigating risk factors of non-alcoholic fatty liver with artificial intelligence methods: We use Deep Learning and Bayesian networks to identify risk factors for fatty liver disease and develop predictive signatures for disease diagnostics.
  • Genetic factors in thyroid disease: In this project we use data from the SHIP study to identify genetic factors and their interactions for hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
  • Prediction of all-cause mortality: This exploratory research project uses data from the SHIP study to investigate the extent to which deep neural networks can be used to make individual predictions of risk-adjusted life expectancy, and whether targeted interventions can be proposed that reduce disease risks. For this purpose, methods of explainable artificial intelligence are being developed and used.
  • Predict cardiovascular endpoints with clinical data to identify high-risk patients at an early stage
